Fly Away (Home)
Let’s go for a drive, Donghae whispers to Hyukjae one night as they brush their teeth, let’s go somewhere Hyukkie.
Where are we going? , Hyukjae whispers back like it’s a secret and in a way it is, because they can’t let the others know and everyone is sleeping.
I don’t know. Donghae is staring into the mirror like he can’t see himself, everywhere. Anywhere that’s not here.
Hyukjae stays silent before gripping his toothbrush and grabbing the other’s hand, okay.
They take Heechul’s car and drive with the windows down. Seoul is beautiful at night, much more beautiful than usual, Donghae thinks, there’s no one around, but it’s so alive. That’s why they’ve got the windows down, even though there are goosebumps creeping across both of their skin.
Let’s feel the city, Donghae had whispered, let’s be alive too, and Hyukjae had simply pulled his jacket closer and rolled down the windows.
The moon is shy tonight, dancing in and out of the clouds rolling across the sky. It’s peeking out now, making dark smudges beneath sharp cheekbones and curling in the hollow of their necks, cutting sharp lines across tanned skin bleached bluish-white in the night air. Hyukjae’s hair is sticking up in all directions and his mouth is open in a wide yawn and Donghae thinks Hyukjae is so very beautiful in the moonlight, like a statue in a faraway museum or something that’s carved out of snow and stardust.
They talk about driving all the way back to Mokpo and look down upon the city from Yudalsan like they did all those years ago. Or maybe visit Neunggok instead; they might not even have to drive, take the subway down and sleep on the train, wake up halfway there to take photos of the disappearing city and of each other. Perhaps, they’ll leave it all behind and drive to the airport, take a plane to Japan; they had always wanted to spend New Year’s together in Sapporo, going to the snow festival and eating the famous 白い恋人 chocolates.
Let’s go to France, Donghae breathes, because he’s a romantic sap like that and Hyukjae nods with a smile (without gums), I want a photo in front of the Eiffel Tower, he mutters with a laugh as he pulls the car to a stop near the woods.
At times like this, when the world is nothing more than moonbeams, passing shadows and them, when Hyukjae’s willing to leave everything behind and hurtle towards nothingness just with a few words from him, Donghae feels like Hyukjae can build mountains and flatten seas.
Heechul’s got fancy car seats and Donghae can feel the rub of the leather against his skin as he slides onto the backseat and his shirt rides up just a little. Hyukjae slides down beside him, hands light and eyes soft; lips even softer.
They lose themselves in each other and try to forget about the world and their obligations, about China and long distances and oceans between them; about people waiting for them, people who love them.
They kiss each other until it doesn’t feel like everything is going to change.
The morning breaks not with the sound of chirping birds, but with Hyukjae snoring softly in his ear. There’s some awkward shuffling as they try to untangle themselves, stretching out uncomfortable cricks in their neck and back. Hyukjae kisses Donghae’s collarbone as they shake out the pins and needles, then buries his face in the other’s neck, Get dressed, love, France is waiting.
They’re dressed and the seatbelts are buckled, but Hyukjae doesn’t start the engine. He sits there and stares at the steering wheel, planning all the places they can go, whilst Donghae stares at his hands and the words come out like an apology, Hyuk…
Hyukjae is cheerful as he continues, ticking off places on his fingers, We can go to the chateaux and the vineyards, the Louvre and definitely the Notre-Dame-
Hyukkie, Donghae chokes out and this time his lover stops, eyes dropping and a soft smile lingering on his lips. Donghae feels like he’s killed someone. He barrages on weakly, Hyuk, we have to go back…the others need us- Hankyung hyung needs me…this is his dreams, I can’t.
Hyukjae starts the engine without a word and turns the car around and that look in his eyes tells Donghae the other was waiting for this. It doesn’t make it any better.
They get back to mild panic in the dormitory and Jungsu is freaking out inside whilst Youngwoon and Heechul tries to calm him down; Siwon’s biting his lips and pacing back and forth whilst Ryeowook set about making cookies to calm everyone and himself. Hankyung is outside as they pull in, leaning against the front door, tapping his feet lightly (Donghae thinks it’s the choreography of their new song and it makes him smile despite everything). The door slams and Hankyung glances up, his eyes twinkling and a broad smile blossoming across his face.
Donghae-ah, Hankyung meets them on the steps, I knew you’d come back.
He sounds so proud and happy, unfiltered affection in that voice that Donghae feels like crying and he throws himself in the older man’s arms, Hyung…
Somewhere along the line, Siwon envelops them both with a relieved laugh, whilst Ryeowook flings himself around them with a squeal, trying and failing to hug everyone at the same time, oven mitts warm against Donghae’s cheek. Then Hankyung pulls Kyuhyun in as well and they’re all laughing breathlessly in each others’ ears, and Donghae can almost taste the excitement and hopefulness.
Then Donghae untangles his fingers from Hankyung’s hair and holds his hand out to Hyukjae, who pauses hesitantly, before taking it firmly and yelping as Kyuhyun almost whacks him in the nose with his elbow. Soon enough the rest of the members all join in, because deep down, everyone is scared, it’s a brand new start and it is too new- it can break them and hurt them and even Heechul is terrified even if he will never admit it. Everyone’s hugging tighter and tighter and Donghae can’t quite breathe properly anymore and someone’s elbow is in his ribs, but his hand finds Hyukjae’s and that gummy smile is there again as they find themselves pressed against each other amidst all the others (amidst all the changes).
It doesn’t matter where we’re going, Donghae thinks breathlessly, we’ll always end up back here.
